The Stavvy

The First Adventure of 2010

The Galloping Grandma is off again! This time I am flying out to Tenerife where I join the Volunteer Crew of the Stavros S Niarchos as Assistant Cook. We then sail from Tenerife to Madeira, no doubt calling in several places en-route. We anticipate getting to Madeira on 28th January and I am then being joined by my friend Margaret to spend the next 6 days walking on, the extremely hilly, or should I say mountainous, Madeira Island.

Thursday's Excursion

Left the ship at 11am and got on a bus which took us on a scenic tour of La Palma island. Visited this lovely old church then went to the National Park which was absolutely stunning. I would love more time to go trekking round those trails. It was so peaceful and cool. In the towns the spring flowers are out - oleander, hibiscus, Bougainvilla, bird of paradise growing like weeds everywhere. Had a set 4-course lunch:- goats cheese and parma ham with pesto and crusty bread; delicious ham and chick pea soup; beef and pork steaks with salt baked potatoes and a huge mixed salad then creamy local ice cream. This, including wine and bottled water was 15euro. Visited a black sand beach then back to ship in time to do all washing up! Now off for a shower and early bed - the wine will help me sleep.
