The First Adventure of 2010

The Galloping Grandma is off again! This time I am flying out to Tenerife where I join the Volunteer Crew of the Stavros S Niarchos as Assistant Cook. We then sail from Tenerife to Madeira, no doubt calling in several places en-route. We anticipate getting to Madeira on 28th January and I am then being joined by my friend Margaret to spend the next 6 days walking on, the extremely hilly, or should I say mountainous, Madeira Island.

Day 1 on board

Photos are from my cabin, one through porthole. Fairly quiet day today. Voyage crew only came on board at 1pm. Now they are getting signed on, harnesses and wet weather gear etc. We only have 8 per watch, which is half full. 40 in total to cook for. Captain says we will sail to Palma tomorrow then hope the wind turns in our favour for the trip to Madeira. At moment easterly sand-ladened from Sahara. Due to change but unsure yet. Heavy swells on way to Madeira apparently. What fun!
