Sailing from Tenerife to Madeira on the 2-masted Brig Stavros S Niarchos. Square-rigged sailing at its best!!

The First Adventure of 2010
The Galloping Grandma is off again! This time I am flying out to Tenerife where I join the Volunteer Crew of the Stavros S Niarchos as Assistant Cook. We then sail from Tenerife to Madeira, no doubt calling in several places en-route. We anticipate getting to Madeira on 28th January and I am then being joined by my friend Margaret to spend the next 6 days walking on, the extremely hilly, or should I say mountainous, Madeira Island.

At anchor in Soller and looking so small !!

This is where I like to be, up the rigging or out along the yards

Madeira
I am now a few hundred yards off Madeira. We have just done a Man Overboard drill in which I have to help lower the rescue rib. The sun is warm but it is still very breezy and there's a lot of cloud about - cool in the shade.
I'm a retired Civil Servant, a volunteer cook for the Tall Ships Youth Trust and a School Governor at Kyson Primary School in Woodbridge. I was married for 33 years and now live close to my daughter and 2 grandchildren, who are the focus and joy of my life. I also love long-distance walking, cycling, gardening, reading, sudoku and too much else to mention. My philosophy on life is the same as my blood group (B+!!)
